Abingdon HC Summer League 2023 Recap

This summer saw the return of the successful White Horse Cup summer league for our Men's & Ladies sides, and a return to the Hawks Summer League for our Mixed team. Fantastic performances all around provided exciting hockey for all those who played and supported the matches at Tilsley Park, or further afield at Oxford Hawks.

Ladies' Captain Report- India Reville

In the ladies league, Abingdon C remained undefeated in their first 6 pool matches, going through to face Bicester A in the semi finals. An exciting goal-packed match resulted in a 5-2 win for Abingdon, and led to another match up vs Bicester B in the final.

A tense first half saw this Bicester team lead 1-0 but a tenacious Abingdon side fought back and their perseverance was rewarded with a penalty flick. With no further goals scored, the final whistle at 1-1 meant the winners would be decided by penalty shootout. Bicester took the lead 1-0 after the first penalties, but an incredible save from Abingdon's keeper and four more scoring penalties, the final score 4-3 meant Abingdon ladies retained the championship for 2023!

The cohesive training from last season really proved to be a key element to the success of all AHC ladies' teams this summer. Taking to the pitch for the first match, it was evident that each and every player was as determined, and passionate about playing great hockey, which set a fantastic standard for the following weeks. It was truly excellent to see the Club as a whole mixing it up and playing great hockey together. Everyone worked together so well to produce some fantastic plays and put into practice the well-drilled presses and easy passes we have been working on. This could only be done through team-spirit and communication so I look forward to seeing more of this at every level next season - and with new-found respect for our captains, I for one will make sure to put availability on Teamo early to help them out next season as the readiness from the ladies this summer made organising the squads a breeze!

Men's Captain Report - Matthew Deverill

Abingdon A took on the tournament with determination and a competitive spirit, playing a total of 8 matches. Their outstanding performance led them to secure 6 wins, 1 draw, and only 1 loss, finishing at the top of the table with 19 points. Bicester A secured second place with 16 points, and Oxford B claimed third place with 12 points. A debut captaining for myself, however I can't take any credit for the performances and attitude of all of the players.

Abingdon A's success was bolstered by exceptional performances from both seasoned players and rising stars. Young talent Charlie Cook left a lasting impression with his speed, focus, and remarkable skills on the wings and in defence, showcasing a level of expertise that surpassed expectations and any hockey "ability" that I myself have or will ever have. Newcomer Keeden Vivian, who was not only new to Abingdon but the sport itself, quickly adapted and absorbed feedback, showcasing rapid growth and an infectious eagerness to learn. Another standout youngster was goalkeeper Damon Trigg, whose commanding presence and incredible saves throughout the tournament were instrumental in the team's success, despite recovering from an injury in the middle of the tournament; honourable mentions for Stu Cardy and Tom Fry who stepped in and donned their GK pads and smock at short notice.

The Abingdon Summer Tournament has served as an excellent pre-pre-season and gives us something to build upon in the upcoming season. The performances displayed from this wonderful group of lads, leaves myself and others very excited for the 2023/24 season.

Mixed Captain Report- Ed Carver

The team this year was mostly made up of Ladies' and Men's 1s and 2s. Playing against some quality mixed sides who play more regularly together, we were able to perform at a really high level and finish 3rd, only dropping 5 points in total over the 7 games. The highlight was the 3-1 win against Hawks on the final game with a great team performance alongside some really impressive individual performances from our younger players too.

Some fantastic results for the club, a huge thanks to all those who contributed to a great summer of hockey, including all players, supporters, and organisers.

We hope you've had a great Summer, and looking forward to beginning another strong season for 2023/24. Senior pre-season training begins on Tuesday 15th August for the Ladies, and Wednesday 16th August for the Men's teams - save the date in your calendars!
