Ladies 1s 2-2 vs Oxford University
The Ladies 1s travelled the long distance over to Iffley Road on a bright Sunday morning to face Oxford Uni in a rearranged fixture. A strong turnout on a Sunday in half term meant Abingdon opened well with great formation and strong intentional passes, advancing early into the attacking D down the lines. An early short corner and an excellent shot volleyed into the goal by Ellie D after deflecting off the keeper’s pads put Abingdon into an early lead. The second goal was brilliantly run down the wing by Annie and slotted behind the keeper putting Abingdon 2-0 up into halftime.
In the second half, an unfortunate deflection from the defence caused stoppage time to treat an injured Oxford player. Play restarted with a short corner, but the downtime played in Oxford’s favour, and they scored their first goal. Also in Oxford’s favour it seemed was the umpiring. Some questionable decisions left the ladies a bit bewildered, and the confusion bled into the game, with great efforts to avoid tackles followed by unfortunate passes to the wrong players, allowing Oxford to gain possession and a second goal. A tough match ending in a draw wasn’t the result they hoped for, but the team will come back stronger next week to make it back up the table.
