An unseasonably bright but chilly Remembrance weekend saw six Abingdon teams take to the pitch and the club picking up some well deserved points. Read our captain's reports for the rundown of the weekend's games.
Our Men's and Ladies 1s both make a welcome return to Tilsley Park this Saturday at 10:30am vs Reading & Henley respectively. Do head down to show your support, and stick around to support the Ladies 3s in their home game against Wootton Wanderers.
Finally, head to your calendar on Teamo to see more details on our next club social on Saturday 2nd December!
Ladies 1s 1-4 vs Amersham & Chalfont
L1s lined up for a cold, dark pushback at Amersham and Chalfont HC on Saturday evening.
We started strong, with good transfers through the back line and determined efforts by our mids and forwards to find a way through the opposition’s defence. The 0-0 score line at half time was a fair reflection of how tight the competition between the teams was.
However, from the first whistle of the second half A&C lifted their game dramatically demonstrating an excellent press and well-coordinated set pieces, scoring 2 goals in quick succession followed by two more as the game progressed.
A somewhat shocked and disheartened Abingdon couldn’t quite find their form to respond. A late goal from Fi Bethel gave us all a lift but too late to change the final outcome. Instead we’ll be looking for our comeback next week against Henley in Tilsley Park.
PotM: Ale Betti
Goal Scorer: Fi Bethel
Assist: Annie Cook
Men’s 2s 3-3 vs South Berkshire
PotM: Curt Philbin
Goal Scorers: James Rogers, Zaid Al-Nakeeb, Ben Hyde
Ladies 2s 6-0 vs Thame
Laura Cardy & Emma Bell
After Laura’s words of ‘give it all you’ve got, we have a week off next week’, we started the game very strong, scoring 3 goals in the first 15 minutes!!
Thame came back strong but we managed to hold them off, staying 3-0 at half time.
Positive heads started the second half well, scoring 3 more!
We ended the game 6-0, fantastic effort and performance put in by all. Including POM Hannah, who before the game said ‘I’ve not scored this season’! Fab result to go into a week off!
PotM: Hannah Scott
Goal Scorers: Hannah Scott (4), Jen Parrott, Christina Sullivan
DOD: Laura Cardy (although slightly controversial)
Men’s 3s 3-0 vs Leighton Buzzard
Matthew Deverill
After a one minute silence the game was under way. Abingdon 3's lined up against what looked like an experienced Leighton Buzzard team.
Despite largely dominating the first half we went in at the break with just one goal to our name with a tidy finish from Sworder.
We made a couple changes at half time and tightened up the midfield. The press worked so fantastically, LB could not get the ball out of their own half - despite huge efforts from the LB GK Sworder managed to score another two goals, with the second being one of the more bizarre goals: Bruce absolutely firing one wide, pointblank at Sworders chest - miraculously the ball hit his stick and went in, otherwise it would have been a painful one!
That's now a hattrick of hattricks in as many games, scored by three different players.
Another solid team performance, we remain unbeaten and top of the league.
PotM: Chris Yates for his incredible running of the right wing
Goal Scorers: Richard Sworder (3)
Ladies 3s 0-0 vs Leighton Buzzard
PotM: Anna Clarke
Men’s 4s 2-3 vs Witney
Trevor Wiggins
The first frosty Saturday of the season saw the 4s make the short trip to Witney.
Despite the frosty start the pitch was deemed playable, although our speed merchants were advised to stick to the sunny parts of the pitch!
Witney proved to be fast starters with an early fast attack and set the tone for the rest of the match.
The 1st half saw both teams trading goals in between some great hockey with the 4s going into the 2nd half in the lead.
The second half followed much the same pattern but without any goals from the 4s, Witney capitalised on a poor period of play from the 4s and taking the lead which despite repeated attacks from the 4s they wouldn't relinquish.
It was another great performance from the 4s.
The juniors are looking more and more settled playing league hockey and continue to go from strength to strength.
PotM: Damon Trigg
Goal Scorers: Steve, Malcolm
Mixed 0-2 vs Adastral
PotM: George Cole
